Konnichiwa! I’m Rie Fukuyama (ふくやま りえ), a passionate Japanese teacher with extensive experience.

I taught Japanese in Taiwan for 2 years, and then spent nearly 10 years at NOVA, one of Japan’s leading language schools, where I was part of the opening staff for the Japanese language program and contributed to curriculum and material development. Now, I’ve been teaching on italki for over 5 years.

Over the years, I’ve given more than 17,000 lessons to around 2,000 students from all over the world, especially from English-speaking and Chinese-speaking countries. I’m proud to be one of the most popular and highly rated teachers on italki (perfect ☆ reviews!).

What makes my lessons special is my original teaching materials, built on the foundation of NOVA’s proven methods and enriched with feedback from students worldwide. I create customized PPT slides, homework assignments, and even YouTube review videos for each level (Levels 1–7). With cute characters like Rocky and Nana-chan the Rabbit, students often say, “It’s so easy to understand!” and “I’ve seen real progress!” Whether you’re a complete beginner needing solid foundations or an advanced learner aiming for business Japanese or fluent conversation, I support you efficiently to reach your goals.

With a major in International Relations and travels to over 80 countries, I truly love cultural exchange and real, meaningful conversations. Through Japanese learning, let’s create lots of joyful stories together!

My Career as a Japanese Teacher

• 2001–2003 | Taiwan: Touwa Japanese Language Institute – Full-time (6 days/week, 8 lessons/day), group/private/corporate lessons, material development.
• 2005–2008 | Kyoto International Center (Volunteer) & Founder of World Friends Club – Organized language exchanges and international events in Japanese, English, Chinese.
• 2009–2019 | NOVA Holdings (NOVA Ochanoma Study Abroad) – Opening staff for online Japanese lessons; developed original system & materials, teacher training, Skype-based operations.
• 2019–2023 | Tokyo Foreign Language Center Kansai – Corporate dispatch lessons.
• 2019–Present | Airbnb In-person Japanese Lessons – Achieved 5-star ratings.
• 2020–Present | italki – Over 17,000 lessons with original PPT materials.
• 2025–Present | YouTube – Japanese lesson channel launched
